For a range of reasons the ability of under-18s to get work experience via part-time employment (Saturday jobs, evening shifts) has drastically fallen.

Labour market regulations make it more costly & less advantageous to employ them;

older workers are pitching for those shifts, more than in the past;

many firms use recruitment processes that don't really work for the young.

The tragedy is young people don't get the chance to sample work early on & build practical experience.
