The best news of 2026 so far:

George Conway enters the midterms race as a Democrat, and this is REALLY bad news for Trump.

This is a former Republican with deep inside knowledge who is now on a mission to destroy Trump and reinstate democracy. He is a lawyer, and he has a proven track record of going after Trump on his own dime.

Liked, respected, capable, and very, very dangerous for Trump.

@randahl George Conway has literally zero chance of winning this race. The DNC establishment will try to install Lasher or the Postin' Kennedy, and the center-right dems who would vote for Conway will vote how they are told by the party like they always do, because they are sheep, incapable of individual thought. Kasky is the only candidate relying on demographics the DNC can't dictate the votes of.

@randahl Being against Trump seems to be the whole of the DNC platform so he should do well. But while i like that about him (and ditto Newsom), it AIN'T ENOUGH. Dems SHOULD stand for things like pushing Medicare-for-All (Jayapal/Sanders legislation), addressing global heating MATERIALLY, no AIPAC genocide, enforcing labor, environmental laws, helping people and planet, not the 0.1% rentier parasite owner-donors.

@randahl In the long term it is not helpful for the Democrats to be running conservatives, particularly Republican conservatives. The Democratic Party has lurched rightward for too many years, and it has gotten the people fuck all.

We need more men like George Conway, men trump is afraid of! And men who aren't afraid of trump! Unfortunately, it appears the whole damn GOP is afraid of the stupid, childish, insane idiot who runs our government. I think the whole republican party should be dissolved since they have never had a good idea, or known how to govern the entire time they've been a party!

@randahl For what it's worth, remember that this guy was married to "alternative facts" Kellyanne Conway, a proud member of the Trump regime.

Remember also, this is a wealth struggle, and Ds+Rs are from the same class.

Someone willing to publicly fight against this regime is always a good thing, and I'll vote for him if I get the chance, but remember also that the Democrats are *so pathetic* that these fucking people took over the country. And they've been that way for an entire generation.

@kevinrns I respect your point of view, but I do not think Conway could run as a Republican, now that Trump has taken control.

Conway would see GOP money working against him, he would have Trump working day and night to ruin his candidacy; plus Trump would do the usual stochastic terrorism moves against him.

There is a reason Marjorie Taylor Greene quit.

We don't need right wing Democrats. If he wants to run somewhere in a Republican area, great, go do that. Maybe he could bump some insane Trumpist out of office.

But the Democrats need to elect leftists in the primaries. This guy is not left at all.

Wow!

I've been following the US demise since ~2015 and taking into account George Conway's position back then and his being married to Kellyanne... it's pretty shocking really, that he's arrived at this turning point. It's a good measure of the extent that the US has crumbled, for this to happen.
What he's said about his intentions are pretty encouraging. I like the impeachment bit the most.

@randahl what? He’s running in one of the most Blue districts in the country and still holds mostly conservative positions. In no way shape or form is this a victory; at best, it’s just an attempt to drive the party to the right. If by some miracle he wins the primary he’s just taking a seat from a better Democrat. It won’t hurt Trump one iota.

@randahl There are nine other Democrats also in the race (as of two months ago!), most of whom would be better. I like Alex Bores, myself, but I’m mostly interested in policy. Conway being a lawyer in Congress is irrelevant (many of them are); it’s not like there’s some secret trick he can use to attack Trump better than other representatives. He already has an enormous public following and doesn’t need to be elected to Congress to keep attacking Trump (and most of these other Democrats would do that too); it’s not like he’ll reach a greater audience than he already has. And if you’ve paid attention to NY’s politics at all in the last year, the mood is decidedly skewing Dem socialist. He has no legislative experience; he just tweets a lot. Apart from the fact that he’s recognizable on Twitter, what does he bring to the table? Why elect him over the other people, especially when his politics are realistically at odds with the district he wants to run in?

@zeblarson very interesting. Thank you.

I am fully aware of the left turn in NYC, and I can definitely see why that would lower Conway’s chances.

But I think your points and my point are not mutually exclusive. Conway can both be the politically wrong candidate for the district, as you say, while at the same time being a very strong weapon against Trump. The man has an enormous platform both in legacy media and on social media (e.g. 2.2 million followers on X, 800,000 on Bluesky).

@randahl Sure, he’s certainly built a strong profile opposing Trump. He’s good at that. But I see no reason why he needs this congressional seat to do that. He could just as easily run in NY-17, which is actually Republican held and would be a flip. (No idea the status of that race but I assume Dems will move heaven and earth to capture it). Again, he’s got such a big platform already that being in Congress won’t raise it at all.
