Usually I'll know within the first 10 pages. More rarely it might take a chapter or two.

Some books surprise me. I remember two books in particular, sequels I had been REALLY looking forward to. One, I finished but HATED what they had done to the characters. The other I got maybe 6 chapters in? And realized that all these previously smart, skilled characters were acting like damn fools and just walked away.
