I'm trying to figure out what to run on my first Nvidia laptop -- a 2017 HP Pavilion with Intel and Nvidia GeForce 940MX.

I've learned a lot in the past couple of days:

The current version of Nvidia's driver (590) has dropped my graphics chip. It's still supported by 580 and older drivers.

590: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/258750/

580: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/259042/

I've used Linux and BSD for so many years and never had to even think about this until now.

Most of the atomic/immutable systems I have been using offer poor or no support for older Nvidia chips. They focus on new and not-troublesome hardware. I understand that.

So far, running the not-Nvidia build of Bluefin LTS has been very smooth. Do I even need the Nvidia proprietary driver?

Experts say yes. I at least have to try it.

So where does that leave me?

* RPM Fusion layered with Fedora Atomic (or added to Workstation or Plasma).

* Debian -- lots of options for drivers
