As Nesrine Malik points out international law (and its prohibitions) while often honoured in the breach, still needs to be asserted; international law is conventional & those conventions crumble if not continually (re)asserted:

'resisting the violation of rules & insisting on adherence, even if certainly in vain, is how norms are established & then maintained. Lying low & hoping that this too shall pass is cowardice, denial & historical illiteracy'!
