Just realized:

I was at the ER yesterday, and the people wearing masks were mainly the patients and the lower ranking and/or non-white staff members

Its never been easier to tell at a glance how trustworthy any random human in public is, bc there is no excuse for not wearing one at this point. None of the staff at the ER who treated me poorly wore one, but all of the staff who were kind to me, did. There was very little if any deviation from this pattern. The same attributes that make a medical provider trustworthy also result in them choosing to mask, and vice versa.

The thing about a medical excuse not to wear one is that such a situation doesnt exist. If youre "too sick to wear a mask" youre also infinitely more vulnerable to the infections they would shield you from in the first place. You would be doing things like social distancing or fully avoiding crowded/enclosed spaces bc even minor infections could land you in the hospital. You would be loudly in support of other people masking bc you are the very person those masks protect. There is also no such thing as a medical provider who doesnt need to mask.

If you want other people to know youre a safe person, wear a fkn mask. If you dont, we see you, bc you are wearing your trustworthiness right on your face.

@Irenetherogue @PhoenixSerenity At my local hospital here in BC the only ones masking are the janitorial staff who are predominantly non-white. Make of that what you will.

@andymoose @Irenetherogue @PhoenixSerenity I was in the cancer ward for imaging, and I was the only person wearing a mask. The freaking cancer ward, my dudes! This is a hospital considered one of the best teaching hospitals in the state, maybe the country. Freaking bare, coughing faces as far as the eye could see. Humans are morons, and it’s a miracle we’ve lasted as long as we have.

@MissConstrue @andymoose @Irenetherogue @PhoenixSerenity putting on my mask to go to the store where *there will be more people there wearing masks* than me, including the guy at the door. I do like this university town with a ton of international people and ... at least some educated people who actually think sometimes.

@MissConstrue @andymoose @Irenetherogue @PhoenixSerenity sigh, not very many people w/ masks. Still, not very many people and nope, not sick or coughing....

@geonz the places it gets me most is medical settings. On a level i can at least comprehend not requiring masking but not in medical settings and esp not in a place like my pulmonologists office or the emergency department. They definitely know they should mask and why, they just dont think we deserve their care or protection enough to do it. If they did, they would. But they dont, so... yeah. @MissConstrue @andymoose @PhoenixSerenity

You're so right.
Even if there weren't a mess of respiratory viruses all over the place, wearing a mask around peole with compromised immunity is the "first do no harm" thing to do.
I have a doc appointment Thrusday -- to get on board with a prmary care physician. Erm, yea, once I"m w/ the nurse prac I'll be being inspected anyway but I reckon I'll wear one to the office. Yea, I've not done doc stuff except for that dog bite and the Look At That Weird Place (it's an age spot, thank you) .... but at 65 it's time to balance the risks the other way.
