We call the very upper #atmospheric (ionosphere) #lightnings elves and sprites (which is itself great). They don't occur everywhere, and the analysis in this study argues that elves mostly occur along the #tectonic plates' boundaries, which is slightly crazy.

High-Altitude Elves Registered on the International Space Station and Boundaries of the Earth’s Lithospheric Plates - Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics

Abstract Analysis of the locations of coordinates of high-altitude ring lights (elves) registered on the International Space Station within the UV Atmosphere international program in 2019–2022 has been performed. Most elves are registered in the equatorial region of Earth, which may be a consequence of the ISS orbit passing through the equator, as well as the presence of a large number of thunderstorms in these areas. The analysis showed that the coordinates of the 37 registered elves are mostly located along the boundaries of Earth’s tectonic plates.
