#askFedi time. The kind folk who added me to their family Duolingo plan are rightly pissed off with how awful it’s got and do not intend renewing. So time to find an alternative.

I’m doing German and Japanese right now, and I use Duolingo to give me some daily exposure to the languages. I absolutely cannot do self-directed study from books or websites. I kind of need the gamification. Also, ads cause me to forget whatever it was I just did, so affordable ad-free is a must.

@feorag I like Slime Forest Adventure (https://lrnj.com/) as a neat indie game for learning Japanese kana and kanji. It's a very different approach than Duolingo so I dunno if it fits what you're looking for, but since it's not well known I like to mention it

Also, I will sometimes want to switch to another language to get some essentials before going somewhere that speaks it. So a good selection is useful.
