Mozilla right now (source: https://www.davidrevoy.com/article1108/mozilla-right-now )

Mozilla right now.

Colourful cartoon by David Revoy. A forest glade, with a cute smiling Firefox sitting on a tree branch. The fox is holding a saw and trying to saw through the branch it's sitting on. The magic AI parrot (from David's other cartoon series) is flying in to offer the 'fox a chainsaw with a blade labelled "AI".

@cstross One cannot imagine that the C-suite at Mozilla don't know they existed strictly and solely to provide a legal argument against Chrome functioning as a monopoly.

That's not a concern anymore. (Whether because of sufficient regulatory capture or the acknowledgement that once MS started using Blink there was no judge who would buy it or both.)

The resulting existential terror at ceasing to exist due to cessation of funding has led them to do a magic, and AI is the fashionable magic.

@graydon You don't get into a C-suite niche this century by being scientifically or tech-literate: actually understanding how things work means you *can't* convincingly perform sincere belief to the investors you need to cozen unless you're a Dark Triad personality as well.

@cstross @graydon

Despite the fact I was R&D (the whole department) I was only brought along for sales calls when the sale was pretty much in the bag and the customer was at the due diligence phase.

Why? Because I couldn't lie to the customer convincingly. (Actually, I'm not good at lying in general.) Apparently me being honest at that stage of the sale was actually helpful.

@cstross An awful lot of them are not only Dark Triad, they have a plan.

(Meaning they're going to outsmart everyone so god will love them the most/they will have all the money.)

The whole idea of civilization flatly requiring preferring indirect benefit to direct gain got lost somewhere, and could do with a restoration.
