I realise this is my confirmation bias at work but…

the CEO of the Vegetarian Society was very good on #r4today a few minutes ago on the pending EU legislation that food manufacturers may only call a sausage a sausage or a burger a burger if it has meat in it.

“A solution to a problem that doesn’t exist”

…There will have been tiny numbers of people who might have bought vegetarian sausages when they intended to buy meat ones. They won’t have made the same error again. Eliminating such errors is not going to magically bump the profitability of participants in killing animals for profit. 😒

But it’s also true that if packaging is stupidly obliged to use a term like “Plant-based tube” that is neither going to stop me from buying them nor make me go “Oh shit, I better buy some meat ones” 🤦‍♂️

#vegan

The “We’ve gone on holiday by mistake” scene from Withnail & I where the rain-sodden lead characters beseech the local farmer has two scales of overlaid text, the first being large enough to act as a headline, the second as a qualifier.

1. “We’ve bought veggie sausages by mistake…”
2. “…is not seriously impeding the money-making potential of killing animals for profit”.

The New Elixir

Johnny Depp Dior ad for ‘Sauvage’, adapted so it says ‘Sausage’, only that too has been crossed out with a sticker above saying ‘Plant-based tube’.

The ad shows Depp looking moody wearing a guitar.

@urlyman My theory is that this isn't really about burgers, sausages and plant milk. It's about establishing precedent before truly realistic chicken legs and steaks hit the market

@roomaroo yes, the Vegetarian Society chap I listened to earlier mentioned lab-grown meat. Does the legislation also define what “meat” is and isn’t?
