#mastotips

I sometimes notice people deleting posts instead of editing them. So here is a tip:

On Mastodon, posts move around like e-mails in the mail system. However, if you edit a post, you are able to correct the error in posts already sent. So that is good.

However, if you delete your post and create a new post, there is now two posts in the system. And people may begin to interact with the deleted post only to see it suddenly disappear. This is obviously confusing, so editing is better.

@randahl And, you can edit a post down to nothing and write “Thought about it, deleted it” :or “Deleted this post, thanks for stopping by”

@randahl - Big thing though is the past versions are still available.

So if its something simple like correcting a typo or adding additional context, then editing is the best thing.

But if you accidentally posted something you dont want to let out, say a picture with too many clues pointing to where your kid goes to daycare, you're better off deleting and reposting. (that way someone doesnt go back through the versions and dig up the old photo)

I don’t have that option. On the instance I use I have *delete & re-draft* or just *delete*. All instances are different & I know I could change instances but I don’t because I have enough trouble just trying to change anything in my bio on this one & by & large it works for as is. I’m not savvy with all this stuff & find what I do easier than the frustration of figuring it all out.

@randahl deleting posts and reposting (re-draft) hides mistakes, as if we are not all human and make mistakes

Personally I type where when I mean were, or were when I mean we're I just edit and blame autocorrect, so people don't think I'm a fucking idiot loser who can't spell to save their life 😜

@randahl I actually joined Mastodon on a node that disabled editing posts (I think because the node owner didn't like the idea that a "historical record" could be updated by future edits).

... I'm not there anymore.
