Fabrice #Bellard is the French code monster who created QEMU, FFmpeg, Tiny C, and tonnes of other highly influential, highly efficient programmes.

But his 2002 IOCCC-winning Obfuscated Tiny C Compiler—a 2048-byte-long, self-hosting C #compiler—is special, even in the company of his other inventions.

@AmenZwa @cstross I had the privilege of working at the desk next to Fabrice for a few years. The experience changed how I go about working with large code bases that I don’t know. Fabric would remind me that it was just a computer, and they always do as instructed, you just have to learn how to crack open the black box of states you don’t understand. Basically, don’t give in when faced with a huge system, it probably isn’t as hard to understand as it feels. That insight has been invaluable to me in my subsequent career.

In addition to his technical genius, he’s also legitimately a nice guy that takes time to teach junior devs, without ego.
