Compressed Air Storage.

"Analysts estimate current CAES capital cost in China at CNY 800–1,500/kWh, with lifecycle electricity cost of CNY 0.20–0.30/kWh, approaching the economics of pumped hydro but with more flexible siting conditions."

There is an existing operational system with a reported 72.1% system efficiency.

@Tallish_Tom
Many years ago there was a compressed air kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) for cars proposed and tested but then sidelined by developments in EV and the PHEV. I think the idea was that when you took your foot off the accelerator it cut the fuel supply and the valve timing changed so the engine ran as a compressor. Then when you put your foot down it would run for a while as a compressed air motor before switching back to normal operation.

@Tallish_Tom What does that efficiency mean here? Energy out per energy in? I. e. (1 - loss)?

(I am a bit puzzled by the article describing the output as »generation«.)

@Ardubal

Not sure myself TBH, my assumption was 72.1% of input power returned as output, which puts it in the same range as pumped hydro.

(Agree on the output/generation confusion)
