What I’ve been up to this week: https://aseachange.com/@elena/statuses/01KANADGYVAPJ79Z569YC5NF08

The big project of the weekend (well Sunday actually, with grandparents looking after my little one) is seeing how “easy” it is to flash Lineage OS on my old Nexus 7. Excited for this challenge 🤗

Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

@_elena right on 👍
Any tips on how to roll back to Android if things go wrong? My phone isn't on any supported list (Lineage, /e/), so it'd be trial and error.

@moonshinebrigade I think rolling back would be fairly easy... just putting it in recovery mode and flashing the stock Android (you can download it from the web).

Now I can't do A THING with my Nexus 7 because it's refusing to connect to the internet (SSL warnings for every site) and it won't connect to the Google Play Store... and is slow as a snail. Going back to square one to figure out what to do with it.

@_elena the first answer looks like an easy way to install a CA cert. Not sure if these steps are possible in LineageOS.

@moonshinebrigade thank you! I haven't been able to install Lineage OS because nothing seems to work on this tablet since updating it to Android 5.5. I just want to use it as an e-reader (so I can do color-coded highlights), grrrr.

I really appreciate your help though!

@_elena
In my experience, flashing Lineage isn’t too hard. The Nexus 7 is a good device to start with, but I believe it had hardware issues that made it slower and slower (even right away).

@_elena Haha, my old Nexus 7 was the beta test for LineageOS and /e/OS for me too. Never bricked it, but it was never easy, at the time at least :)

@_elena I can’t say that I do. I used the guides from the official forums, but it was hit and miss both times, it never quite worked exactly like in the tutorials and also sometimes worked the second time without changing anything. It’s absolutely not like the simplicity of installing Linux these days. Today, I’d definitely buy based on compatibility (e.g. Fairphone 6) and rely on the OpenAndroidInstaller or the /e/OS easy installer (never tried either).

@_elena But I made it work! And my Nexus 7 still runs /e/OS, albeit version 1.x. Still a big upgrade from an OS that was 10+ years old and absolutely incompatible with anything anymore.
