I'm deep into a bug scrub on the #TasksDotOrg github because I've gone all-in on using it for to-do list management, and having been around this mulberry bush several times now on Android, just let me say:

* holy fuck, building a to-do list app (which can use CalDAV as a back-end no less) is REALLY COMPLICATED

* Google Calendar Reminders must have been specced by an industrial design genius with a budget, because the UX was fucking *perfect* for me in 2018, but then I de-Googled 馃拃

#TasksOrg

I think what I'm really saying here is that the GCal reminders UX was perfect out of the box, whereas I need to do multiple rounds of deliberate learning & tweaking to get equivalent utility/behavior out of Tasks.org, and no other solution even comes close to this level of (good) imperfection while also having a self-hostable data store.

which reminds me, I better figure out how to back up my settings, because that doesn't get written to CalDAV...

@deutrino Yeah, I 100% agree with this. After migrating onto self-hosted infra, some of the open source alternatives just don鈥檛 have great UX. I feel like I have to wrestle with software sometimes to make it do what I want, which is annoying.

@deadsuperhero and Tasks.org is great software which dude has worked his ass off for years building and being responsive on Github issues, and I can only imagine Google Calendar reminders *must* have had a highly skilled development team with $$$ because it worked so well out of the box. but my flavor of AuDHD is *highly* dependent on cueing to remember wtf I'm doing, so de-Googling and having even mild friction in basic life management apps is quite painful and has been substantially limiting.

@deadsuperhero I'm also lowkey obsessive about UX despite not being a "UX person" and it's probably telling that my personal programming bucket list is starting to accumulate items which boil down to "make a friendly fork of ____ which is all about stripping it down to an opinionated subset of features and then sanding off every wart in the UI until it's elegant or thereabouts"

I really need to figure out how to self-support by doing this because I *know* I would be good at it
