May is ambivalent about 馃
@mayintoronto@beige.party  路  activity timestamp yesterday

Looking for an elder 2SLGBTQI+ person to join my volunteer non-profit board at https://ODLAN.ca. Must be based in Canada, since we serve Canadian non-profits in our community.

We're doing some really neat work and are growing our reach and impact every year. Help our 2SLGBTQI+ communities exist safely and inclusively in the modern digital world.

Not an elder? Doing some neat things in our communities? Need support from us on how to exist safely as an organization? Reach out anyway.

No board experience required, but please tell me what expertise you bring to the table!

Would love any of the following expertise:
- Board experience, especially board governance expertise.
- Legal expertise (you are not our lawyer).
- Accounting expertise (you are not our accountant)
- IT, support or experience in non-profits in the community.
- Indigenous community members++
- Whatever nifty thing you're great at/are an expert in.

Time commitment: 5-10 hours a month.

Look, I didn't feel qualified to be on the board either. I'm the board chair. We all figure it out, as long as we're willing to do the work together. 馃槉

We always reserve a board seat for an elder (someone who identifies as "older"), since our org started by helping rainbow seniors in institutions get online at the start of the lockdowns. Our work has to serve the needs of everyone in our community.

Inclusion includes seniors too, and that starts at our board.

We also have other board seats open, but the elder is the most important seat we're trying to fill right now.

Q: What does a board member do?
A: We're a governance board, which means that we have people running the organization ("Operations"). The Board of Directors are legally the directors and the officers of this non-profit entity.

We are responsible for the success of the organization. We provide guidance, governance (via our strategic plans, bylaws or policies), and financial oversight to the operations. We hire and fire the people who run the organization.

I think there's a few more, but that's the gist of it.

The opposite of this is a "working board" where the board is also the people of the organization doing the work. The board is still responsible for governance, but it can get a little muddied.
