Thanks for your interest in Bonfire and the #OpenScience flavour! We'd like to clarify a few things to clear up any confusion:

- ORCID authentication is optional: it's only active if the instance operator chooses to enable it by adding an ORCID API key.
- Uses open standards: the integration uses OpenID Connect / OAuth2, just like most modern federated login systems.
- Operators have other choices: any SSO provider can be added, including adding multiple providers side by side.

- Email signup is always an option: Even with ORCID (or other SSO) enabled, people can still sign up with email.

In short: Bonfire does not force anyone to use ORCID, nor does it rely on any single identity provider. Our goal is to provide flexibility and user control, not centralisation.

If you have further questions or suggestions, please reach out, we always welcome feedback!
