Your washing machine could be sending 3.7 GB of data a day — LG washing machine owner disconnected his device from Wi-Fi after noticing excessive outgoing daily data traffic

The owner was puzzled why a clothes washer would need so much data.

The thing that really puzzles me is why is LG paying for all of that compute? I understand tracking/telemetry, but what kind of tracking needs every washing machine to send 3.7 GB of data daily?

Is user data so profitable that there's no point in paying developers to optimize the code that does the tracking?

Edit: Turns out it was likely that the Asus router was simply misreporting how much data was being uploaded.
