What happens when Gen Z doesn't show up to their own protest?

Yesterday, such an event gathered 17,000 participants in Mexico City (according to official estimates). Clashes erupted in the Zócalo with protesters attempting to enter the National Palace. Official tallies register 100 cops and 20 protesters injured and 40 arrested.

Notably, the vast majority of protesters where not members of Gen Z. More notably, they were right wingers, urged to attend by delightful individuals such as Vicente Fox and Ricardo Salinas. Their grievances echoed those of the far right internationally - persecuted defenders of free speech and thought besieged by a leftist dictatorship.

While Mexico is often seen as an important site of radicalism, it also hosts a strong reactionary current that, while unique in its context, in past years has been building affinities and connections with the far right worldwide.

What is most troubling is that the left in Mexico has been successfully disarticulated by MORENA's recuperative rise to power. Only the right can gather such numbers in the streets these days. The Gen Z protest that wasn't is a disturbing reflection of such a reality.
