#Listening to The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, specifically their 2012 album Twenty Dozen;

"I'm a dirty old man, and I feel like spanking somebody!"

Yeah, more or less 馃榿

#HatTip to @nevar23, whose October post linking to the Dozen's Cissy Strut introduced me to this fabulously spicy band.

A curious thing about listening to music using a digital music player is that you can play around with the speed. Giving you an insight into how the difference between one genre and another can be as simple as the speed they generally play at.

For example, if you drop the speed of the first jazz funk on Twenty Dozen to about 85%, it starts to sound like ska. At about 65% is sound more like reggae. At about 50-55% speed, it takes on a dub feel.

If I could just pitch shift it too ...

@strypey There is a legend that a very hot summer in Jamaica in 1966 meant nobody wanted to dance to ska, so musicians slowed it down and invented rocksteady.

Another that it was caused by a new drummer for the Skatalites who couldn't play at the same speed as the previous drummer, so the band deliberately changed their tempo.

Another that rude boys would deliberately dance to ska at half speed, because it made them look menacing and cool.

In any case, reggae emerged from rocksteady, so whatever the story it began as slowed-down ska.
