40 days for what? Why cave now? Why these particular Dem Senators? *Looks at map of cities most impacted by flight cancellations.* Ah...

Schumer (NY) 🛫

Booker (NJ) 🛫

King (ME)

Hassan (NH)

Durbin (IL) 🛫

Ossoff (GA) 🛫

Shaheen (NH)

Gillibrand (NY) 🛫

Masto (NV)

Warner (VA) 🛫

And yes, we were headed for a major aviation incident if we didn't cancel even more flights or get FAA folks paid. Maybe we still are. 😢

And no, this is not saying that I think caving is the right call. It's not.

For everyone wondering what the solution is: how do you keep all the flights without paying the FAA employees? Simple. You don't. You cancel even more flights, or pay workers.

That's what "government shutdown" means.

Otherwise, it's just a "government pay down," for government employees.

Graphic showing cities most affected by flight cancellations during the government shutdown.

 Atlanta, Newark, O'Hare, Denver, Phoenix , and Seattle are highlighted as majorly impacted.

@mekkaokereke

I'm one of the people who don't currently have a congresscritter.

And, my senators are Cancun Cruz and Crony Cornyn.

Correct me if I'm wrong. . . I thought the entire point of Vote Blue No Matter Who was that the party would stand for us if we stood for them.

Note: Don't anyone give me sass when I point out that Schumer and the other establishment Dems are as ready to fuck us as the Gender-focused Old Perverts are. If they do the same shit, they're the same assholes.

@mekkaokereke It truly is some Hot Garbage that the US Government is the one employer in the entire country who can get away with requiring their employees to work without pay.

I've never stolen food from a grocery store. Maybe that's because I'm a good person? But most likely that's because I've never needed to.

I haven't experienced the sting of having a full time job while knowing that I still can't pay rent or feed my kids.

I haven't lived that.

So I am supremely unqualified to speak on the sacrifices that "we" should continue to make, or to opine on the short term vs long term trade-offs.

Because "we" are not sacrificing.

If I wanted the shutdown to continue, I should have figured out a way to keep the people's pay, but stop the work.

@mekkaokereke I'm incredibly glad that you haven't faced this. The terrible decision to steal formula for your kid or food for you and your wife... I always stole formula. Today I am free of this burden, but worry and try to help those that need. Thank you for raising the topic.

@mekkaokereke If all the people who supported continuing the shutdown would "adopt" a family that is a victim of the shutdown and supply them with food, etc. they'd show that all y'all really *are* in this together.

@mekkaokereke

In their fight against Putin's tyranny Ukraine has had to live without civilian flights for 4 years.

@mekkaokereke To what degree, if at all, do you think the shutdown affected the recent elections? Was that the thing dems were waiting for?

I'd rather they more effectively tell the "Republicans are starving poor people to force Democrats to capitulate and help them take healthcare away from poor people" story than cave now.

@watters

I don't think it affected it much at all. The polling didn't change much from before and during the shutdown. Eg for the New York mayor election, Staten Island and parts of Queens still went Cuomo, as they were predicted to.

The "economic anxiety" lie of 2016, and the "price of eggs" lie of 2024, were both just that: lies. They were both referendums on "How do I feel about fascism?" There are really three ways to answer this question:

1) Fascism yes!
2) Fascism no!
3) Fascism maybe? But it depends on which side of the fascism I will be on!🤡

Most of the recent polling shifts have been people in the maybe camp conditionally changing their answers as they find out that they are in fact targets of the fascism. Yes, this includes immigrants who voted for Trump, and then voted for Mamdani.

"I thought Trump would lower prices! 🤡" is not an honest answer for voting for him. Because no one that did that, did so believing that they themselves would be a target of the fascism, but that their fascist oppressors would get cheaper eggs.
