free software people and related nerd fiefdoms need to understand that when you send someone on a wild goose chase as a rhetorical deflection when they express a problem with a thing you evangelize, and they actually go on that wild goose chase and it doesn't solve their problem or actively makes it worse, this erodes trust at best and can also make you look like a liar and an asshole depending on how obvious it is that you never tried any of the things you recommended

you can avoid both of these problems by simply acknowledging that the person's problem is real and valid, and by being transparent about it if you haven't personally tried the solution you're proposing
