There's a whole generation that learned irony before sincerity and now they're trapped. Can't be earnest without a layer of self-deprecation. Can't be enthusiastic without signaling awareness of how cringe enthusiasm is.

@Daojoan IDK, I think all the anti-irony is reacting to the mildest form of a long-running cultural posture. If today's Marvel quip irony is sipping a light rose, early 2000's Daria-spec irony would be drinking methylated spirits in a paper bag on the street (while underage, also you're watching an Al Qaeda beheading video you got from Limewire).
I think the turn towards sincerity is nice, but I also think there's a lot of subtext that gets missed now. 'Whatever...' isn't just 'whatever.'
@Daojoan a thought just popped into my head...how much of the cultural turn towards sincerity comes from a reaction against Trump and MAGA's deep grounding in ironic communication?

There has always been a whole generation that knows exactly what's wrong with any other generation.
Sociologists call it 'my generation' or simply 'we', which seems a rather technical term, but the core idea dates back at least to Aristotle.

@Daojoan I'm sorry to hear that and it sounds terrible. Enthusiasm is not cringe, it's the most happy and elevated state a mind can be in. And it's so rare that it should be cherished whenever it occurs, because it cannot be manufactured.

@Daojoan there are people and a lot of them who consider earnestness a weakness to be exploited.
Sarcasm and cynicism are defensive mechanisms.
Pessimistic attitude means one is rarely disappointed and too often right.

@Daojoan Worry more about our own generation that has earnestly and wholeheartedly believed in outright lies, baked right into our self identities, our family relationships, our views on life and death

I've seen my most hard-ass sarcastic friends become sincere, but only after they've come face-to-face with mortality.
It's hard to believe how cool I thought they were, when now it seems so obvious they just terrified of being judged.
