Alright, here's another check to see if I have anyone in my network with HR-ish/recruitment-ish experience who knows how to craft job applications who is also experienced with the open source world and thinks they could translate that... DM for deets?

Boosts welcome!

@zkat

For a job application, your geographic location will matter for legal reasons.

@JMMaok these are largely volunteer positions right now, but do you have info I can read about?

@zkat

There may even be legal issues around volunteering, depending on where you are.

Your best bet is probably to start by looking at organizations a little larger than yours for examples, ideally in your same jurisdiction.

@zkat

The Carpentries have a very strong system. Maybe a bit overwhelming and more than you need, but definitely worth a look. Here’s their handbook for maintainers https://docs.carpentries.org/handbooks/maintainers.html

DemocracyLab also has a system for recruiting volunteers to open source projects worldwide https://www.democracylab.org/

@zkat job application or job description? If the latter let me see if I saved my notes on good hiring.

@luis_in_brief for a “job” that’s really just a mostly volunteer position. I don’t know how to build something like this taking into account what we need etc. we’re getting to be surprisingly formal for a foss project but we have a lot of non developer roles

@zkat I’ve worked with HR to craft position requirements. Without specifically mentioning FOSS, one easily translatable skill is the ability to judge risk and impact of any software package, tool, etc. to be used or incorporated in product development. The more formal (provable, thorough) the analysis, the better. That said, quick back-of-envelope assessment is good too. At least this was true in my day. Nowadays, who uses envelopes?

@meltedcheese I'm trying to get a reasonable application process in place for a collective I'm part of that's doing an open source project. Most of us are volunteers, but it's been pretty chaotic and we want to make sure to have a bit more of a filter as far as who we let in now and how. I just don't know how to do that work best.

@zkat I’m sure there are people here with some hard won knowledge about #FOSS teams and processes.
