Being a parent is the biggest fucking responsibility you could take on in your life. I have nothing but deep respect & admiration for parents who work hard at loving & caring for their kids.

But so many people seem to think their children are accessories or mere extensions of themselves.

Oh, you only had a kid because felt like you were "supposed to" have a kid? Do you just do everything other people expect of you? Have a spine & do your own thing.

I think a lot of shitty parents just comfort themselves with the thought that everyone has shitty parents.

The only problem is that it's not fucking true.

Both my spouse & his older sister only exist in this world because his parents had elderly relatives that wanted to see a baby briefly before they died.

That is a really bad reason to have a child you don't actually want to raise.

I don't care what personal issues keep you from standing up to the people in your life, it is selfish as all hell to have a kid you will neglect rather than risk having a strained relationship with a grandparent who wants to dictate your life before they die.

@artemis I can’t imagine being a parent like my parents were to me. I had my kid pretty late in life because I knew I had issues and have to work on it before projecting all of it on my offspring

@farah
That's wise. I always told myself I would not have kids until I got my mental health to a really stable place.

Of course, now I'm married to someone I might *actually* want to raise a child with & my mental health is fairly stable but the world is not. I think I'm going to have to just content myself with doing what I can to make the world better for other people's kids & maybe being a cool aunt.
