I think it can work both ways, not having the image gives folks who never need to use alt text a feel of what it's like.
@JessMahler @Nisaa it could be interesting to have just all the descriptions without the image. It's fascinating to read so many different perspectives on the same photo. What stands out to each person, how they describe the different elements, descriptions of the content of the image as well as the image itself, sometimes a narrative to go along with it. And it's interesting as a sighted person to think about what I would make of all these descriptions if I couldn't see the photo.
