OK, I've been craving getting a real Linux box set up on real hardware (my VM corrupted itself a while back, very sad!). I was looking into Mini PC hardware and, uh…oof.
Then it dawned on me: I could solve two problems at once! So here's my plan:
1) Buy a used Mac mini M2 with double my current storage/RAM, then
2) Convert my current Mac mini M1 into an @AsahiLinux system running Fedora.
This would give me a great Linux machine *and* a better, updated macOS machine for a pretty low price! 🤯
@jaredwhite I have Asahi Fedora running on an M1 MacBook Air and it’s very nice. Good plan!
@andrewbriscoe @jaredwhite I have asahi Debian on an m1 mini. It’s mostly good.
Note that it does not support thunderbolt, so you can’t use it with any modern Apple monitors.
I reinstalled it like six times before I figured that out. “Why does it never come up after install?”
So IDK if this is a dealbreaker for you, but it is for me. I'm moving off Fedora this weekend.

While I am not a fan these days of the Inc. part of Apple, Inc. (that's putting it mildly!), I think the era of Apple Silicon has resulted in really fantastic hardware. Because I don't particularly want to fork over big money to the corp right now, nor do I have much cash in general, that's why I'm thinking used market.
(P.S. Anyone have a Mac mini M2 16GB/512GB+ they want to sell me? 😄)
