Ok found a work-around: exceptionally, the XS and XS Max still have recovery images available from the developer portal and I happen to have one of these in my lab 馃榿
@konstantin Is 'recovery images' the same as 'restore images' found in https://developer.apple.com/download/os/#ios-restore-images-ipad-new ?
@sensen yup, exactly the same! if you expand the download section, you see they鈥檙e now limited to specific models of devices. There is a window of time when a new iOS version is released when the older version is still available but it was a lot shorter this year and I didn鈥檛 think to get a ipsw file in advance.

I tried restoring from one of the downloaded image for i12, but failed to start due to authorization failure.
I wonder if going to Apple Store and asking them to install iOS 18 would work. 馃ス
