If your Mastodon server is being very slow today, it may be due to a DDoS attack on one of the biggest hosting providers.

They are aware of the situation and they're taking action against the attack.

This attack doesn't affect servers running on different hosting providers.

EDIT: Okay, looks like the attack is over, servers seem to be getting back to normal. If you are still having problems ask your server admin, if you are an admin ask your hosting provider.

@FediTips

We've seen a similar spike on our own instances.

I don't think it's an attack. Definitely some kind of mass scan of mastodon instances.

@kini

I'm going by what the hosting provider said: https://mastodon.social/@mastohost/115422619048254541

@FediTips Thus proving that the fedi is not as decentralised as we imagine it is. A big enough attack on the hosting providers could take most of it down at the same time.

That would be equally true if every single fediverse servers was hosted in someone's closet. In either case, how much of the verse could be taken down depends on what exactly you mean by "big enough.

I agree with your call for further diversification of where fediverse services are hosted, to increase resilience against targeted attacks like this.

But keep in mind that the scAmazon outage would have affected a much larger proportion of the verse than the DDOS on masto.host, and much more seriously too. AFAIK the DDOS didn't take any services offline completely, just made them a bit sluggish while they weathered the storm.

@FediTips Interesting. Who is it being attacked? We're having some issues too and wonder if we're caught in it, it's a side effect, or it's a concidence?

@kev

It was masto.host but the attack seems to have just stopped.

If you're not on masto.host then it might be some other problem?

@FediTips Thanks. Yeah, I'm on a Digital Ocean droplet so I guess it's not that. A whole bunch of IPs started pulling loads of timeline and tag searches since early this morning, which was really slowing me down. I've just blocked the range they were in. I might open it up again and peek at it. 🤷🏻

@FediTips Is there an ongoing attack on masto.host? Any more information anywhere?

@FediTips you should name the hosting provider, doesn't really hold much value now?
