Why Argentina Needs Tether
Here's context the Times missed:
Tether's USDT stablecoin is EXTREMELY popular in Argentina because:
Crushing inflation: "Low" inflation = pesos lose 1/3 of value yearly. "High" inflation = 3/4 of value yearly.
Capital controls: Until recently, Argentines couldn't legally buy dollars. USDT became the workaround.
It's their bank: Many Argentines use USDT as their primary "bank account" to escape peso devaluation.
The hostage situation:
If Tether collapsed, Argentina's economy would face severe disruption
Any hint Tether can't redeem its 173 billion tokens would trigger mass panic
Argentina is now dependent on Tether functioning
This makes Tether "too big to fail" for Argentina specifically.
And guess what? A $20B US bailout that stabilizes #Argentina also stabilizes #Tether critical market.
