#UX/UI is one of the most destructive bits of design theater that we, as a community have inflicted on ourselves.

It's Visual Design, not UI design. To assume "Design" is composed of just two parts is both crazy and confusing. The world sees UX/UI and thinks "Pixels"

I will die on this hill

@scottjenson I really liked "Interaction Design". It avoided emphasizing "how it looks" but did not claim an vague concept like "experience" that too many disciplines want control of.

@scottjenson so much has been said about enshitiffication, but not enough about how UX/UI has become icon design by managers. It feels like it's responsible for more damage.

@technobaboo The design community LOVES to obsess over titles. I wish we'd just say we're designers (lower case d) and get on with it.

@scottjenson haha yeah, though what label you choose can indicate what methods you use, it is a good signifier

@technobaboo I get your point but as designers, we should know that the people who hire us don't give a shit about what methods we use. They just want us to solve a problem. In fact, one of my issues with "UX/UI" is that it implies there are just "two methods" (when there are more than a dozen).

@scottjenson @technobaboo fwiw we regard UI to be the visible design / accessible surface and UX to be measured by "how do users experience interacting with the flows/actions/metaphors we offer'. Definitely two different concerns even if UI designs influence UX outcomes.

@delta @technobaboo and that's a great way to interpret it! My issue is that most don't

@scottjenson I thought most understood UX to be the whole user experience??

@troed Sadly no. Good example "UX" job postings on opensourcedesign.net are mostly graphical/icon requests. (but this is slightly worse in the FOSS community)

But even in commercial work, to many say "UX/UI" and assume the work is mostly pixel related.

@scottjenson

"sees" is the challenge, since so much of UX is about the invisible in multiple dimensions - and it is only getting more complexed and chaotic as everything digital gets more interconnected.

I also realize this ship has sailed. I'm just going to sit here and be grumpy because it makes me feel better.
