I disagree with this take. It's a very convenient way to abdicate responsibility for slow progress on phasing out fossil fuels. "It's not us! It's the billionaires! I can't 'personal responsibility' my way to a greener future!"🤡 Very convenient and plausible excuse.
But... who we vote for matters. The system of government that we choose, matters. For example, the United States government is intentionally slowing progress on phasing out internal combustion engine cars. It is slowing down subsidies for solar panel installation. It is not investing sufficiently in grid storage. All of these failures are because the politicians that we elect, are not the politician to want to make rapid progress on these things.
But the politicians that do want to take bold action on climate, are unsurprisingly, the same politicians that want to take bold action against racism. And most white US voters choose not to do that.
I focus on US voters, because the US is doing more to prevent rapid progress on climate than any other country.
