A fascinating discussion on Midweek MediaWatch about whether or not Sean Plunket's digital soapbox The Platform is under the jurisdiction of the Broadcasting Standards Authority;

Plunket is a contemptible human being who platforms hateful concern trolling, in the style of Cameron Slater. So on one level I'd love to see the BSA throw the book at him. But as with the case against Slater, there are deeper principles at stake here.

I have to imagine what I'd think if it was the Bradbury Group or Big Hairy News being hauled in front of the BSA by the Taxpayer's Onion or the NZ Institute. Because the same principles I'd want to apply in that case also need to apply to media channels whose hosts I disagree with, no matter how strongly. Things like respect for freedom of thought and expression, and equality of all citizens before the law, or any other form of state regulation.

Before I can say much more on this, I need to learn more about the BSA, its mandate and guiding legislation, and the nature of the complaint laid against The Platform.

Info and thoughts welcome.
