@pezmico I was in Venezuela pre Chavez. The inequality was staggering to behold, even by Latin American standards (I was familiar with Mexican norms of poverty and the slums of Caracas were off the scale in comparison). Just as with every other colonised country, entrenched elites get really salty when the marginalised band together and <gasp> gain political power.

Yes, Chavez went too far in a lot of ways, and his tenure became undeniably autocratic. But the fix for chavismo is not going back to some hard-right repressive oligarchy that hands out favours to a small circle of wealthy pricks. Their oil hegemony is not going to last much longer, either.

Any politician that is celebrated by Atlas is on the wrong side of history, and the Nobel committee doesn't have a very impressive track record when it comes to rewarding the wrong figures.
