…also, I know enough French to have some personal experience with typing accented characters on a keyboard designated as ‘French’, but I’m periodically amazed at all the extra keystrokes accents must make for as a general typing experience. And this must apply for every language that has Latin characters as its underpinnings but with accents and other glyphs layered on top?
And furthermore…
…given that the general direction of travel that the web wants to go in is as low effort as possible – which is why we get things like the fetish for all lowercase – it’s kind of amazing that accents persist at all isn’t it?
Do some people just not bother? I mean surely it must be mostly possible from context to figure out a word that *should* have accents but doesn’t. Or am I talking mostly monoglot shit?…
…In essence I suppose I’m asking what is the collective vibe that says we should definitely keep all these diacritics going?
I suppose it’s no different in principle than me going out of my way to use curly quotes than straight ones.
Sorry for the rambling
