In a historic shift, renewables as well as nuclear overtook coal as the world's top electricity source in early 2025. Solar power drove this transition, meeting 83% of global demand growth and enabling developing nations like China and India to actually reduce fossil fuel use.

While developing countries lead the clean energy charge, developed nations like the US and EU are increasing reliance on coal and gas.
