Gas sets the wholesale price whenever it is on the grid (nearly always). So, use gas less often.

More non-gas sources (includes batteries while renewable curtailment is still high)
Zonal pricing (at least Scotland would get cheaper electricity)
Technocratic market change to blend cost of all sources and pass that on rather than the highest contributor price as now. Would be a fundamental shakeup and, after lobbying, might make things worse.

Factcheck: Why expensive gas – not net-zero – is keeping UK electricity prices so high - Carbon Brief

The UK’s high electricity prices have become intensely political, with competing claims over the cause of rocketing bills and how best to get them down.

Bottom line, the cheapest and fastest way to reduce UK electricity prices is to go gangbusters on renewables, BESS and transmission lines.

More gas is the absolute worst option.

@Broadfork

FYI, UK does seem to be going gangbusters on BESS at least (Not all these will happen but ~100GWh under construction or ready to start is pretty impressive).

UK: over 17GWh of BESS due to connect to grid in 2025, 9GWh consented so far

Despite a 12% fall in the capacity of newly submitted planning applications in 2024, there is still a strong interest in UK BESS.

@Tallish_Tom There’s a chink of hope to cling to.

I’m slowly digesting the carbon brief article. I’ve learnt much from it but there’s so much there I don’t yet (and maybe will never) understand.

I very much appreciate your input. Thank you.

I also found this, which is a good explainer:

Electric Insights | Quarterly Reports

Why are Britain’s power prices the highest in the world?

@Broadfork

Unless average renewables CfD strike prices are more expensive than gas... I haven't found this data yet.

If they were more expensive then historic prices should not track as tightly to the gas price as they do.
