just a few short months ago people kept explaining to me how the US military "will not stand for this"

a few months before that I was being explained to how "the courts will stop it"

about a year ago it was "he will never win the election"

after his first term it was "the guardrails held"

and during his first term I remember all the "you don't understand, the checks and balances will..."

*sigh* 🙄

@rysiek The analogy I have constantly made for a decade and a half is with NASA management in the lead-up to Challenger. Every near miss and people said not "fuck, how do we prevent that from happening again" but "well I guess the margin of safety was adequate, full steam ahead" and did nothing.

@rysiek The privilege of willful denial.

I hate it.

I don't know what to do about fascism in the USA.

but one thing I do know is: plenty of people had been pointing out shit is going sideways for years, and all they got in return was being patronizingly USA-splained.

if all the effort that went into explaining away the signs of rising US authoritarianism over the last decade or more was instead put into actually stopping that rise, perhaps we'd be in a different place.

but hindsight is always 20/20, I guess, right? who could have known… 🫠

@rysiek yeah, I think it's important to simultaneously hold that America has been oppressive, violent, and imperial since its founding, acknowledge and maybe apologize to those who weren't heard in the past saying so, *and* also recognize that this is taking what's been wrong with America and cranking it up to 11, possibly to a new low.

I think there's specifically a more extreme *fascism* than before - like America has had many of the tenets of fascism, but never this same level of centralizing power and authority on the One Dictator. whether it's overall worse than ever I don't know, it's been pretty shit, but none of the previous fuckwad hateful leaders have been this Supreme Dictator about it.
