The UK's Information Commissioner's Office seems quite pleased with its work on Meta's "consent or pay" model, because it has got the price down a bit.

And seemingly it considers that this constitutes "consent" under the UK GDPR.

> “Under Meta’s chosen approach, people will be able to choose between consenting to personalised ads or paying a monthly subscription for an ad-free service – known as a ‘consent or pay’ model.

> "During the course of our engagement with Meta, it significantly lowered the starting price point at which users would be offered a subscription. As a result, users in the UK will be able to subscribe at a price point close to half that of EU users.

ICO statement on changes to Meta advertising model

Following the ICO's engagement with Meta about how it uses personal information for its advertising model, we welcome Meta's decision to ask users for consent to use their personal information to target them with ads.

@neil
I left Facebook a couple of years ago - right after they imposed the pay or consent policy. Haven't looked back since.

@neil half price vs. EU users, but yet AFAIK EU users have a real version of consent?

@neil farcical. That's not real consent - either you allow us to push more intrusive ads at you or you pay for the 'privilege' of generic ads. Where's the option for no ads?

@neil is it "consent" if it's the only way to interact with some services or communities?

Facebook have (very successfully) positioned themselves as the gatekeeper to many grass-roots community groups and those who do not wish to consent in this manner (or pay for the privilege) are shuttered out of many interactions.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if Facebook still had RSS feeds for "Pages" but any compatibility with the truly "interconnected" web are long since gone blobsad
