👋 Here's an informative article to share the next time you encounter a nuclear power advocate. battery_charging Please take the time to give it a quick read. I found it quite helpful, I hope you do.

❗ Edit to add: this post is not meant to serve as a challenge for nuclear advocates to jump in a start an argument (I thought that I made that clear!) On nearly every topic I welcome a debate--not on this one.

👉 EDITED AGAIN: Muting this conversation since it looks as if I am not making myself clear.

@SnowyCA Finland puts “World’s Largest Sand Battery Now in Operation”.

Uses sand to store thermal heat when it’s cheap to produce. Finland uses district heating. Rather than every individual building consuming energy to heat itself, a set of buildings use a common heating source.

Offers efficiency of scale

@SnowyCA We must have energy all the time … Is a pile of sand cheaper safer quicker easier than a nuclear reactor?

@SnowyCA Okotoks Ab did a 19 year 52 home solar thermal district heating experiment, Drake Landing, using solar collectors on garages and underground thermal storage.

Stored the energy from the hot summer to heat homes in the cold winter. Does it get hot in the summer and cold in the winter anywhere else in Canada?

Was abandoned because of “worn out parts”
Meanwhile Finland pursues advances in district heating, sources and storage…

@SnowyCA One of the reasons DrakeLanding was abandoned was because one of the underground borehole temperature sensors failed. With the borehole design the sensors can’t be accessed once construction was completed

With a sandbattery similar to Finland’s this could have been repaired?

The other issue was the air handling units (the “furnace”) needed replacement parts. The manufacturer stopped making them.
