What’s the catch, then? How come I’m not still there?
Well... Western is a chronically underfunded public institution located within public transit distance of a ski resort—which means that salaries are not commensurate with the cost of living. We just couldn’t make it work financially. But if you’re able to do it—willing live in a crappy studio or with roommates, or you’ve got a highly paid partner—and you love teaching, this is kind of a dream job. 2/3
It really saddens me that the Colorado legislature refuses to fund Western properly. (And also that the university—under previous leadership appointed by a Republican governor—abolished the faculty housing that would have made it possible to recruit and retain faculty who didn’t have ‘independent means’.)
