If #Funkwhale is #federated and uses #ActivityPub then why do I need an account? Why can't I login with my Mastodon account? That's my identity, I don't want yet another account to keep track of.

@stevenixon
Give me working ActicityPub login and we can probably add it.
@smallcircles
@stevenixon I wish. This is theoretically possible with the ActivityPub Client-to-Server API, but very few platforms have implemented it. Because Mastodon was the first to adopt ActivityPub, and has the most apps, many Fediverse platforms ended up adopting that API instead, and Fediverse platforms themselves became full-stack implementations instead of clients.
It’s not all bad news, there’s some promising work still happening on that front. But, it’s still a big missed opportunity. Being able to sign in with one identity would be a killer feature.

@deadsuperhero Having thought about this overnight, I think it comes down to that difference between companies adopting AcivityPub or adpoting the Mastodon API. My confusion has stemmed, on reflection, from pixelfed. When you go there you can log in with Mastodon. I can follow people over there and see their picture or I can follow pixelfed over here and see their posts.
I suppose what I was looking for was that, but what I really want is Signin with ActivityPub based off local credentials.
