@rysiek The problem is, there is no open source alternative to discord, right? Discord is extremly powerful as a community building tool, with its text, voice and video channels and complex admin and moderation features, if it wasn't a company exploiting its users. Otherwise it would be great for organizing grassroots movements, online activism and protests, but all open source alternatives, I have seen so far, are no match in terms of features and usability.

@rysiek Good advice about privacy, but tying it to the murder of Charlie Kirk is a bit off IMHO. I'm no fan of Charlie Kirk, but I'm even more opposed to murder. And even more so murdering people for speaking their opinions. On top of that, Charlie Kirk's murder probably will strengthen his allies, not weaken them.

@rysiek unfortunately this is a problem that every messaging service except signal suffers from. If you’re upset with discord for presenting as a private option when it is not, I can’t understand why you’re recommending people switch to matrix - A platform that is also not fully secure (but presents itself as private and encrypted)

But I feel like there is an answer to ‘why don’t they implement some sort of e2ee?’ And the answer is just that discord as a company does not give a single shit. They have always been a VC funded initiative with the goal of creating a big, free social network and then flipping to a model of maximum profit extraction using the network effect (people won’t leave because their friends are all there) - or just selling themselves to a larger company

@rysiek I hate it too but I feel like the endgame is laws that make it illegal to build a service in such a way that warrants can't be properly carried out. Not being nihilistic. Just thinking logically about how the authorities would respond.

It is not well know that nearby, Oak Park, on the way in to Chicago, has an NSA training center. Good luck finding it, but I met a former SIGINT operator who was trained there.
Of course they work with the feds.
The time has come where they will need to be clear about who pays for their time, and how that time should be spent.

@rysiek Frankly, I thought about the discord thing: it's not the only professionally infected software, OOB. They try to make things good here at Kafeneio, but I know there is secret code in Mastodon, and it took a group of guys in Texas and Japan years to do it, so it won't be unraveled tonight or tomorrow.
I am lucky I do not have to maintain this instance: It is likely difficult because we speak out against injustice.

(although it is frustrating that they can do this but when i tried to report somebody for posting a link to a phishing scam they said there was nothing they can do because he deleted his message).

@rysiek what's funny is that Mastodon is wide open, like email, and direct messages can easily be read on the server.

however.... ActivityPub (the base of mastodon) is soon coming out with Messaging Layer Security (MLS) which is an end to end encryption.

AND Mastodon is run on multiple servers. (I actually host my own for the family on a crappy old server in my office)

so it's quite possible that the safest and most stable message system, that cannot be taken down or corrupted by the government, may actually end up being activitypub. lol

@rysiek I mean the worst thing I know with Discord that sometimes there's just not a single alternative server chat on other IM and your only choice is to either join the server on discord or just not join it.

the cops seem to be made aware of an image in a private chat, but didn't know the content or context. this suggests that no, law enforcement is not monitoring chat logs, nor did discord hand them over. if either was the case, the cops would've had no confusion about what was sent

Just to make this clear because it seems it's not clear to a lot of folks using Discord:

The way Discord uses the term "server" is massively misleading. There is no separate physical or logical infrastructure involved. No separate "instance" of any software.

In Discord, "server" means the same thing as "channel" on Telegram, or "group" on Facebook.

With everything that this implies – like Discord's access to all data shared in these "servers", including "private" ones.

Which, to be fair, makes sense. People don't have time and energy to learn the stupid games being played with people's human rights.

And it's also technically not even Discord's fault; authorities basically everywhere expect compliance :/
