Building personalized feeds for ActivityPub is hard.

Small Loops instances don't have enough signals to power recommendations effectively.

That's why I'm developing @activityrank to store cross-instance engagement patterns and serve video recommendations via open APIs.

Think BlueSky's PDS but for algorithmic discovery.

Open source, of course.

You will be able to use our ActivityRank service or run your own ✨

@dansup @activityrank if it’s implemented in a privacy respecting way, I would consider making the dotmakeup bridges contribute data to improve activityrank’s recommendations

@dansup @activityrank considering that algos are not popular among fediverse uaers. It blow my mind that personalized feed is implemented before thr ability to search using keywords and hashtags

@dansup @activityrank very interesting, will there be a way for parents, or others acting in children's best interests, to create or curate feeds for children? Or people to design their own algorithms or choose algorithms designed by others? I believe Bluesky has this but I haven't seen it in the Fediverse?

@dansup @activityrank I really don't want "personalized" feeds. I want tags: "newest, best of year, best of all times". Personalization is what led to the fall of culture, because no one shares anymore common art (movies, music) with anyone else. Everything's personalized, so it's a culture of one. This should not come to activitypub. Social media on activitypub should operate how social media operated around 2008-2015, before the algorithms took over.

With all the respect @dansup - don't you have enough projects already? Pixelfed, which should be the main project has a lot of bugs, you have so things on your list.
Starting this new will give you less time for pixelfed I fear...

@joergi Pixelfed is my main priority, and I have been working on it for 7+ years now.

We went from 200k users in January to over 800k users, while shipping Android and iOS apps (to App Stores) and adding new features like Pinned Posts, Custom word Filters and Stories

That in itself is pretty impressive from a solo dev perspective, just look at commit stats

Most bugs are caused by misconfiguration, and I'm quite responsive to fixing actual bugs in Pixelfed

Not every dev can handle this, I can

solo dev

I thought you had a team now 🤔 The messaging you put out re: whether you are or aren't working with a team is a bit confusing

@dansup @joergi how can config lead to "bugs"?

If playing around with the config leads to behavior similar to bugs then that's a bug

Building this IS definitely a big success, no doubt. And you can be really proud!
But i doubt, that all the bugs are misconfigurations.
Just 2 example bugs:
I really doubt this are misconfigurations:
https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/6064
https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/6114

And this one is a conceptual problem: Pixelfed users will never receive mentions from e.g mastodon without a picture:
https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/6014

And I don't want to spread negativity. I just fear that it will move you away from Pixelfed
