As while reading I had the nagging feeling that I knew this already, and not just from seeing the IK being lost to axing.
@pluralistic This is also why corporate #ai initiatives fail as byo-ai use in the workplace grows. What a professional photographer can do with image generation is miles beyond what you or I can. It’s workers with Fingerspitzengefühl who know how to get the most out of AI in their specific job. Corporations have got it backwards: don’t give AI to managers so they can fire workers; give AI to workers (and you might find you need fewer managers).

Fascinating piece today. Thank you! One of us is misunderstanding the quote from John Philip Sousa. I read it as saying that the phonograph is the soulless machine, not the musicians. Sousa was a violinist. Take it from me (I like to play the violin. And I like to drink Scotch. Most people would rather hear me drink Scotch.) playing the violin requires a great deal of process knowledge.

This is minor, but —I read Sousa’s complaint with the opposite valence you do. He’s sad because he sees the upcoming huge loss of process knowledge. Everyone on the stoop used to be able to sing.
He’s also sad because the recorded versions aren’t paying him like the printed ones, I guess, but the stoop singers are also singing old songs he doesn’t have any money interest in.
