Trying to find either a dry oilskin or a waxed cotton in a red tone (I really want a rusty red, but I could settle for a burgundy or a slightly brighter red with no pinky tones to it) and I'm not having a lot of luck. I've found a few places with either black or brown tones, but I wanted something brighter for a winter raincoat. (I know winter is almost over, but it's probably going to take me until next winter to make one.) I tried DIYing it some years ago and it... did not go well (the resulting fabric still smells awful, and it developed a weird brownish bloom on it too).

I'm considering Merchant & Mills in the UK (I like the rust or oxblood dry oilskins) but I'd really rather be buying from somewhere in Australia for the sake of getting it sometime this year. Anyone know of any sellers with more of a colour range? Or any other options that are reasonably breathable?

EDIT: I've caved and looked into ripstop nylon and even Goretex, and I swear everyone only has black, brown, maybe a dark blue if I'm lucky, and sometimes virtually any colour but red. (Including yellow, which I know is rather traditional for raincoats but I don't think I look good in it.) Am I just buying at a really bad time?

I guess I could test the pattern by making up the liner first (haven't really decided on what I'm making that in yet, I want the raincoat to be a bit lighter to account for humidity but not too light; I've had bad experiences sewing with flannelette before and I haven't had any luck finding single-side brushed cottons or similar, and I think shirting cotton is probably too light) and I probably should do some tests of how to sew in Hi-Vis tape so I know how it's going to behave.

Sorry if this is an dumb response, but have you tried looking for waxed canvas, as opposed to waxed cotton? Poking around online I see some australia options with some shades of red(ish). Did not dig deep enough to determine that they actually have inventory. Ordering direct from china also might be an option, I assume the striles haven't picked a stupid trade war.

FWIW, I have a backpack made of waxed canvas that sees daily use and has lasted for years. I wouldn't want to work with that fabric doing manual sewing, I assume you have a machine with some guts.

@artemesia Huh, I got the same sets of results when I tried 'waxed canvas' rather than 'waxed cotton' - maybe I needed to keep scrolling further or try a different search engine. I keep getting a lot of wholesale results, which aren't super helpful - their minimums are often way above what I need (and I don't really have the storage or capability to resell easily) if they'll even sell to someone who doesn't have an ABN.

I didn't get a lot of international results for actual fabric other than Merchant & Mills for dry oilskin - mostly for finished garments - but maybe I need to refine my searches a bit more. It's more the shipping than the costs that puts me off there - both the cost of shipping and the time frames for it getting here - but if it comes down to it, I guess I'll have to look further afield.

As to sewing it, it'd definitely be by machine - I'm hoping my powered machine can handle it (a Janome, I can never remember the model number but its fully mechanical, maybe 6 years old?) because I'm having to look at selling my treadle machine (and that one would be limited more by the strength of the needle than anything inside the machine).

@dartigen Would this waxed canvas be an option? I found the site while searching, and while I don't know how good it is, you can order colour swatches to get a feel for the fabric.
