F-Droid
@fdroidorg@floss.social  ·  activity timestamp 2 months ago
It's a graph of some F-Droid servers bandwidth doubling from August 25 to 26. The top text says "Google: announcing some evil thing, again", under it another text says "F-Droid: *servers go brrr*". Above the concave graph there's the head of the F-Droid logo and the graph now looks like its smiling.

@fdroidorg i wouldn't even care much about only getting 80kbit/s (as i do frequently) if fdroid kept reliably puttering along but very often it stops like 10% in unless i keep the app and screen active. when i can't do something else while it's downloading it's much more of an issue.

thanks for being a main reason i don't need a google account blobcatheart

@fdroidorg mostly I had issues with servers in the USA, I chose "not my country" and it was fine. Might work for someone?

@Fer24 We expect to affect all devices that Google controls, those which came with Google Play & Services. But we have no insight into the future.

The perfect time was these days to switch phones.
It takes time to download the apps and get everything back in place but never had a phone laying around for hours just to download the apps.
This box is ✅ now. No need to do it twice ;)

IzzyOnDroid ✅
@IzzyOnDroid@floss.social replied  ·  activity timestamp 2 months ago
@fdroidorg interesting. At #IzzyOnDroid, we saw this spike 2 days earlier, at the 23rd, with number of downloads (https://stats.izzyondroid.org/) suddenly spiking from 30k to 50k daily (but there were such spikes before). Coincidence? But yeah, number of daily visitors started climbing after 24th with 250k to 270k on the 27th…

@fdroidorg I believe that at least some Linux package managers monitor the download speed and automatically change the mirror if it's unexpectedly low. Maybe an idea for you too?

@fdroidorg does it try pick the fastest or closest one by default? It is very slow even after canceling and starting again a few times, so I assume not.

@fdroidorg

I disabled a bunch of mirrors, and the ones that were left were fast. I arbitrarily picked ones close to me, and a couple from other regions I liked the flags of.

Not an educated solution, but it may work until the true issue is revealed.
