On the surface, Bruce Springsteen is the workingman’s troubadour—the bard of highways and mill towns. But for a Black listener, his voice carries another weight: it echoes the sorrow songs, borrows from Black survival, & exposes the fracture at America’s core.

Black-and-white photograph of a musical performance showing two musicians---Clarence Clemons and Bruce Springsteen with their heads together. On the left, Clemons in a suit and tie plays a saxophone with intensity,, frowning, his face shining with sweat. On the right, Springsteen, with tousled hair leans in close, mouth open as if singing or shouting into the music. The image captures a moment of energy and collaboration on stage.
