Run it against the top level of your hard drive. And if you have multiple user accounts on your Mac, run it from within each account.
I don't think System Settings is telling the full truth because according to Grand Perspective this one item (supposedly only 51GB) is as proportionally big as it is in the report.
One does not fill a 1TB drive with two dozen 51GB sections.
This seems to comply with the colored sections of the earlier readout which make total sense to me. Still no idea what the "System Data" usage is.
Also GP reports 100GB free while Finder says 11GB.
Will keep digging.
@siracusa It looks like I was indeed using more than I thought but also 300GB of ... would you believe it: old Xcode iOS device data/simulators that didn't show in any UI and uh ... node_modules (caches)
Im sure macOS is counting some of my developer stuff (Postgres dbs, etc) as "System Data" but I 100% guarantee that it's not 70% of the disk. My entire home directory (including pg dbs for dev) is ~200GB.
