Freedom is included lower down the definition. I think the indicator of "safe" is crucial. We live in a world where at massive scale, helped by AI and social media - perfect tools for bad actors - language is massively politicised and weaponised for nefarious purposes.
Safe spaces entail that people of all kind can find a true home and can participate without fear of reprisal and a whole range of forces that suppress freedoms and oppress minorities, including racism and discrimination.
Yes. We should go from dictionary meaning of the word, imho. If safety is used to restrict someone's freedoms in a way that is detrimental to wellbeing and healthy social dynamics, then the environment isn't safe and the claim of safety is unwarranted. Acknowledging that fairly is then the first step towards making improvements.
I just defined a missive for a SX manifesto: "We help reclaim common language to prevent abuse by bad actors who seek to redefine it".
This relates to another SX challenge that will be part of the methodology: how do we turn wisdom into lived experience and habitual practice?
A regular person after all cannot be expected to have that book at hand. Under SX an overall assumption exists that 'simple solutions still exist' and that's on the basis of existing wisdom, knowledge and collective life experience and skills (of mankind). Ultimately things boil down to software that induces Humanity and Freedom.
The mention of "conglomerations" is important too. This relates the intricate small inter-linked community network that exists on the fediverse social graph.
Among the freedoms is also the freedom to differ in opinion and to associate only with the people you want to associate with.
What "safe" means can differ per community. That is only healthy. Society is not one uniform soup after all.
But everything within the bounds of Humanity and Freedom, take as intrinsic values.
These are intinsic values for Social experience design, a new field I am elaborating methodologies by doing applied research and development.
They are listed here: https://coding.social/introduction/#commons-participation
Interestingly in "Humanity and Freedom" the Humanity must come first, always. Upon which the intrinsic value of Freedom then builds further. That is important as it provides a good framework to deal with arguments of free speech extremists acting in bad faith, who would violate other people's rights.
